Thamini Uhai, formerly World Lung Foundation, is a Tanzanian non-governmental organization committed to reducing maternal and early neonatal mortality and strengthening health systems in underserved rural areas. Since 2008, Thamini Uhai has partnered with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, implementing impactful initiatives.

From 2008 to 2019, Thamini Uhai collaborated with Bloomberg Philanthropies to enhance quality Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care services. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Local Government Authorities, the organization pioneered and scaled birth companionship as a crucial component of respectful maternity care across 27 health facilities in Kigoma, Katavi, Geita, and Mwanza Regions.

Partnership Program for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement in Tanzania

Thamini Uhai has secured funding for the implementation of the Partnership Program for Comprehensive and Integrated Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement (Mjamzito na Mtoto Salama) in Tanzania. This ambitious five-year program, jointly supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation, will be executed in three regions of Mainland Tanzania and will be implemented in two phases:

This initiative aims to accelerate the achievement of 2030 SDG targets by improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in Tanzania. It will achieve this by strengthening the delivery of quality and respectful Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC), including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) management, antenatal care, and comprehensive newborn care, with a special focus on scaling up care for small and sick newborns. The program will also provide strategic technical support to the Ministry of Health in reviewing technical guidelines and associated learning resources.

In line with this, Thamini Uhai is seeking to recruit qualified individuals for the following position:

Position Summary:

The Advocacy and Communication Officer will provide leadership and technical oversight for Social and Behavior Change (SBC) and communication functions within the Mjamzito na Mtoto Salama project. This role ensures that community engagement, health promotion, and program visibility efforts are strategically aligned, evidence-based, and delivered to high-quality standards. The officer will lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of SBC and communication strategies in alignment with program objectives, national priorities, and donor requirements, while offering technical guidance to partners and government stakeholders on effective approaches. Responsibilities include overseeing capacity strengthening, performance monitoring, and mentorship activities in collaboration with community leaders and local governance structures. The role ensures that complex maternal and newborn health interventions, supply chain strategies, and systems strengthening initiatives are translated into clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate communication products. Furthermore, it will strengthen program positioning through consistent, high-quality messaging, lead documentation and knowledge management to capture and disseminate program achievements and lessons, and establish monitoring systems for performance tracking and adaptive improvements. The officer will also ensure compliance with donor visibility and reporting requirements and coordinate budget planning and resource utilization for SBC and communication activities to support efficient, accountable, and results-oriented implementation.
