Background

WHO is committed to saving lives and reducing suffering during times of crisis – whether caused by conflict, disease outbreak or a disaster. The new WHO Health Emergencies Programme (WHE) addresses the full risk management cycle, meaning it works with countries to address emergencies before they happen by working on prevention and preparedness, helps in the response to the emergency and also, once the initial event has passed, on recovery. The new Programme builds on WHO’s years of experience working with countries in emergencies.

 

The purpose of this assignment is to provide support to the activities of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme within the WHO Tanzania Country Office. During the assignment, the WHE Communications Assistant will have the opportunity to support the production of communications deliverables, national advocacy campaigns, and event management. The WHE Communications Assistant will also have the opportunity to learn about WHO’s response to public health emergencies.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the WHO Representative, the officer will work in close collaboration with the Risk Communication Focal Point and the WHE Team Lead, to assist and supplement the work of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme in the following tasks:

  1. Editorial support: Draft reports, proofread and translate WHO communications products, such as articles, newsletters, press releases, brochures, media posts, etc.
  2. Documentation: Provide information for news stories, analyze data and research studies to produce programme factsheets, document meetings, events, and workshops
  3. Media Outreach: Prepare press kits, track media stories, draft press releases, create and update media lists and outreach.
  4. Design and archiving: Produce and design visuals for communications products, archive and caption photos for sharing; assist in the knowledge management of WHO products and publications.
  5. Web design: Support the creation and publishing of online content relevant to WHO Health Emergencies Programme
  6. Any other duties assigned by the WHO Representative
