About African Initiatives for Relief and Development

The African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-political, non-religious, and non-profit organization. AIRD provides technical and operational support, including supply chain, logistics, and infrastructure, in collaboration with Relief and Development Partners operating in disaster-affected, poverty-stricken, and development-focused areas.

Our partners include UN agencies, international donors, national organizations, and governments.

AIRD Tanzania Program is seeking for qualified National personnel for the position below:

Position

Position: Driver – AIRD, Tanzania Program based in Makere

Reporting to: Fleet Officer

Summary

The Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of assigned project vehicles in support of official duties only. Reporting to Fleet Officer, the role ensures strict adherence to AIRD fleet policies, UNHCR regulations, Occupational Safety & Health regulations and Tanzanian traffic laws.

The Driver is fully accountable for accurate mileage and trip records using Smart Fleet technology, prevention of fuel misuse (including siphoning), avoidance of unauthorized trips, passengers, luggage, and engagement with unapproved garages, and proper custody of vehicle documentation.

The Driver must hold valid and verified driving licenses confirmed by the Tanzania Traffic Department, responsibly use the official phone for duty-related communication, and maintain high standards of honesty, integrity, and accountability at all times.

Key responsibilities

• Safely and responsibly operating assigned vehicle for authorized official missions.
• Ensuring the assigned vehicle is used strictly for authorized missions only, with no unauthorized trips, passengers, or cargo.
• Ensuring that transported cargo in accordance with approved mission orders, waybills, and dispatch instructions.
• Ensuring full accountability for the assigned vehicle, including mileage, fuel usage, and condition.
• Correctly and consistently completing vehicle logbooks and Smart Fleet trip records.
• Proper handling, securing, and protection of cargo during loading, transportation, and offloading.
• Ensuring all mission orders, waybills, delivery notes, and handover documents are correctly completed and signed at the end of each assignment.
• Ensuring the vehicles are serviced regularly in line with fleet maintenance schedules and reporting faults promptly.
• Planning routes based on road conditions, access limitations, weather, and safety considerations.
• Completing vehicle logbooks, and fuel records accurately and consistently.
• Driving in a professional manner that prevents damage to vehicles, cargo, infrastructure, or the environment.
• Compliance with Tanzanian traffic laws, organizational fleet policies, and safety standards.
• Performing other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Fleet Management.

Tasks

1. Driving & fleet operations

• Provide passenger and cargo transport for official missions only as authorized by the Fleet Officer.
• Comply with Tanzanian traffic laws, road safety rules, and defensive driving practices.
• Avoid unauthorized trips, route deviations, fuel siphoning, and engagement with local garages without approval.
• Record all trips accurately, including mileage, destinations, fuel usage, and purpose, using logbooks and Smart Fleet systems.
• Use the assigned office phone responsibly and remain reachable during official duties.
• Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor in line with fleet operations.

2. Vehicle care, maintenance & fuel control

• Clean the interior & exterior of the vehicle regularly and maintain acceptable hygiene standards.
• Conduct routine daily and periodic vehicle checks, including oil, water, brakes, brake fluid, tyres, battery, lights, and general condition.

3. Reporting & incident management

• Immediately report all accidents, incidents, damage, loss, or theft of vehicle parts or fittings, including minor incidents.
• Cooperate fully with investigations, reporting requirements, and insurance or police procedures as required.

Qualifications & licensing

• Clean driving record with proven knowledge of Tanzanian traffic laws.
• Valid driving license – Class C, C1, D, E (Heavy goods vehicles, Coaster, Light Vehicle and Bus), supported by license verification letter issued by respective Authority.
• 3-years’ experience as a driver.
• Experience working with an INGO or humanitarian organization will be an advantage.

Knowledge & skills

• Knowledge of Tanzanian traffic laws, road safety regulations, and defensive driving practices.
• Practical understanding of fleet management procedures, including trip authorization, logbooks, waybills.
• Basic mechanical knowledge to identify early signs of vehicle faults and perform minor, approved preventive checks.
• Knowledge of fuel management procedures, fuel control measures, and consumption monitoring.
• Ability to accurately record mileage, fuel usage, and trip details with high attention to detail.
• Familiarity with humanitarian/INGO operating environments, including field and camp settings preferred.
• Good communication skills in English and Swahili for coordination supervisors, and field staff.
• Ability to use mobile phones and basic digital tools for official communication and reporting.
