Role Overview
We are seeking a technically minded, commercially driven professional to develop UNIFOISON’s industrial chemical business in Tanzania and neighbouring markets across East and Central Africa. Based in Dar es Salaam, you will develop industrial customers and distribution partners, understand production challenges, and coordinate chemical solutions from initial assessment through trials and commercial supply. The role focuses on mining, ceramics, construction, and pulp and paper, with industrial water treatment as a shared application across these sectors. You will also identify opportunities for the Polymers Business Unit through a dotted-line working relationship.
Key Industry and Product Focus
Mining & Mineral Processing
- Mineral-processing chemicals and essential industrial reagents.
- Coagulants and flocculants for clarification, thickening, tailings and dewatering.
- Process-water treatment and water-recovery solutions.
- Customers include mines, mineral-processing plants and specialist distributors.
Ceramics
- Dispersants, deflocculants, binders and rheology modifiers.
- Functional inorganic raw materials and selected glaze ingredients.
- Chemicals for ceramic-slurry preparation and wastewater treatment.
- Customers include tile, sanitaryware and other ceramic manufacturers.
Construction & Building Materials
- Concrete-admixture ingredients, including PCE, sodium gluconate and lignosulfonates.
- Dry-mix mortar additives, including cellulose ethers and redispersible polymer powders.
- Cement-additive ingredients and selected waterproofing and repair-material additives.
- Customers include admixture formulators, mortar producers, cement plants, ready-mix and precast manufacturers.
Pulp & Paper
- Retention and drainage, charge control, and strength additives.
- Starch, enzyme and surface-sizing systems.
- Defoamers, release agents, cleaning and deposit-control chemicals.
- Process-water treatment, fibre recovery and sludge-dewatering chemicals.
- Customers include recycled-fibre, packaging-paper, tissue and other paper mills.
Polymers – Dotted-Line Collaboration
- Identify opportunities for PE, PP, polymer additives and packaging applications.
- Introduce qualified prospects to the Polymers Business Unit.
- Support customer access and follow-up, with specialist grade selection and commercial decisions coordinated by the Polymers team.
Key Responsibilities
Market and Customer Development
- Build a qualified sales pipeline across Tanzania and the assigned regional markets.
- Identify industrial plants, purchasing decision-makers, technical teams and distribution partners.
- Use plant visits, industry networks, LinkedIn, CRM and digital research tools to develop opportunities.
- Create account plans and convert prospects into recurring customers.
Technical Solution Selling
- Understand customer processes, raw materials, operating conditions and performance requirements.
- Work with application specialists to recommend suitable products and trial plans.
- Present proposals based on measurable performance and total cost in use.
- Identify cross-selling opportunities across process chemicals, water treatment and polymers.
Trials and Application Support
- Coordinate the full development cycle: Customer Assessment → Sample → Laboratory Test → Plant Trial → Optimization → Commercial Order.
- Agree trial objectives, baseline data and evaluation criteria with customers.
- Track relevant results, such as mineral recovery, settling and dewatering, slurry viscosity, mortar workability, paper strength or water-treatment performance.
- Document findings and coordinate troubleshooting with technical teams and suppliers.
Commercial and Account Management
- Prepare quotations and negotiate commercial terms within company authorization.
- Manage sales forecasts, margins, customer follow-up and repeat business.
- Coordinate payment follow-up, order execution and delivery schedules.
- Handle customer feedback and complaints with quality and technical teams.
Supply Chain and Product Coordination
- Work with UNIFOISON’s international supply network on product availability, specifications and packaging.
- Coordinate samples, TDS, SDS, COA and other required product documentation.
- Communicate customer requirements accurately to suppliers and internal teams.
- Support product qualification and formulation development where commercially justified.
Market Intelligence and Reporting
- Monitor competing products, pricing, customer investment and emerging applications.
- Identify portfolio gaps and opportunities for local distribution or formulation partnerships.
- Maintain accurate CRM records, trial reports, forecasts and account-development plans.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Pulp & Paper Technology, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
- At least three years of relevant experience in technical sales, chemical applications or industrial materials.
- Practical knowledge of one or more of the core industries; expertise in all four is not required.
- Ability to discuss production challenges with technical teams and translate them into commercial opportunities.
- Strong B2B business-development, negotiation and relationship-management skills.
- Professional English communication skills; Swahili is an advantage, and French is particularly valuable for Central African markets.
- Ability to work independently, maintain disciplined follow-up and travel regularly across the assigned territory.
- Confidence using CRM, spreadsheets, LinkedIn and digital prospecting tools.
Additional Advantages
- Experience with industrial customers or chemical distributors in Tanzania, East Africa or Central Africa.
- Established relationships with mines, ceramic plants, building-material producers or paper mills.
- Experience conducting plant trials or troubleshooting chemical applications.
- Knowledge of industrial water treatment and solid–liquid separation.
- Exposure to polymers, plastics conversion or industrial packaging.
- Experience coordinating international chemical supply and import logistics.
