Mission and objectives

UNICEF, in full called the United Nations Children's Fund, is an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.

Context

During the current country programme 2015-2022, UNICEF supported the Government of Tanzania to create an enabling environment for nutrition, which included advocacy for domestic financing of nutrition interventions, strengthening national and sub-national coordination mechanisms, strengthening nutrition information systems and evidence generation. UNICEF also supported the implementation of maternal and early childhood nutrition programmes in Mbeya, Iringa, Songwe and Njombe regions in Mainland and in Zanzibar. Therefore, the country has made considerable progress on domestic resources mobilization for nutrition, increased capacities of Ministries Departments Agencies and Local Government Authorities to generate and use evidence on nutrition activities implementation and budget tracking. As a result, in 2021, 546,669 (89 percent) caregivers of children under two years with regular counselling services promoting early childhood pro-nutrition behaviours; 3,657 children with severe acute malnutrition were being treated in Mainland and Zanzibar, representing 46 percent of the annual target. In addition, UNICEF supported quality lifesaving treatment to 1,365 children with SAM (83% of annual target) in refugee and host community children in Kibondo, Kasulu, and Kakonko districts; 83% (7,256,572) and 97% (238,507) of children 6 – 59 months were supplemented with vitamin A in the Mainland and Zanzibar. These achievements have barely been documented yet we anticipated that this could enhance the field of knowledge in Tanzania across regions and contribute to improve nutrition programming in Tanzania. The UN volunteer will contribute to the generation of evidence, to the nutrition team advocacy efforts and the dissemination of knowledge.
