Important Note: The successful candidate is required to be available to start as soon as possible, as this position needs to be filled urgently.

MAIN PURPOSE

To provide comprehensive obstetrical care to pregnant women and their newborns. This includes pre-natal, intra-natal, and post-natal follow-up, in alignment with MSF obstetrical and reproductive health protocols, universal hygiene, and newborn care standards. All care will be provided under the supervision of a specialist doctor to ensure the health of patients and prevent post-delivery complications.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Ensuring the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC and CEmONC), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of sexual violence victims, reproductive tract infections, and fistula care, reinforcing standardized protocols.
• Where PMTCT is implemented, ensuring adherence to the PMTCT protocol in ANC/delivery and PNC consultations, including pre-counselling, testing, and post-counselling.
• Collaborating with medical doctors and/or nurses in the management of Sexual Violence cases.
• Assessing the feasibility of referrals for pregnant women from TBAs to the OPD/MCH for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries.
• Ensuring hygiene and sterilization criteria, including universal precautions, are met according to MSF specifications.
• Performing cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment, following user manuals and protocols, and alerting supervisors to any malfunctions.
• Guaranteeing a regular and ongoing supply of necessary drugs and equipment for maternity activities, including monitoring consumption, controlling stock, and ordering supplies.
• Properly following up all newborn babies from delivery until discharge, educating mothers and relatives on the importance of breastfeeding, vaccination, and potential complications from harmful traditional practices.
• Ensuring patients' right to privacy and confidentiality is respected.
• Supervising that administrative procedures for admissions and hospitalizations comply with MSF protocols, and verifying that patients are properly informed and receive required documents (birth certificates, vaccination cards, etc.).
• Participating in the organization of the ward in collaboration with other midwives and the maternity ward supervisor. Ensuring the transfer of relevant information to the next shift team, particularly identifying high-risk cases.
• Conducting normal deliveries independently according to current MSF protocols. Managing obstetric emergencies, identifying cases needing referral, and ensuring timely transfer. Cleaning up newborns and registering initial neonatal medical acts (cord cutting, cleaning, vaccination, etc.). Detecting and reporting possible anomalies/infections in newborns to the doctor to ensure successful interventions.
• Supervising the use of drugs, facilities, and obstetric materials to ensure rational use based on patient numbers and prescriptions. Ensuring pharmacy stock levels are updated, maintained under appropriate conditions, and remain above minimum safety points.

Definitions:

• BEmONC: Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care, including administration of antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products post-abortion, assisted vaginal delivery (preferably with vacuum extractor), and newborn care including resuscitation.
• CEmONC: Comprehensive Obstetric and Neonatal Care, encompassing the full BEmONC package plus surgery (caesarean section, hysterectomy, laparotomy), safe blood transfusion, and care for sick and low birth weight newborns.

Requirements

Minimum Educational Qualification:

• Desirable: Diploma in Midwifery or Bachelor in Midwifery.
• Essential: Must possess a Valid TNMC Registration.

Experience:

• Essential: At least two years of working experience in midwife-related activities.

Languages:

• Mission language (English) and local language (Swahili) are essential.
