BRAC Maendeleo Tanzania is part of a leading development organization that started its operations in 2006 in Tanzania, focusing on thematic areas of Agriculture, Youth and Women Empowerment, Food Security and Livelihood.

About the Programme

The MasterCard Foundation in partnership with BRAC International (BI) is implementing an initiative that will create a positive and measurable impact for 1.2 million adolescent girls and young women in 9.5 million People across seven countries in East and West Africa, including Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda.

There is mounting urgency to support adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living in poverty, which has been further amplified by the global pandemic. Through this partnership, scalable economic development approaches will be delivered in communities to foster the agency and voice of AGYW. They will have the opportunity to fulfill their aspirations, achieve sustainable livelihoods, and engage in advocacy issues.

Objective

This internship is intended to provide the Programme Officer Intern with practical, hands-on experience in the implementation of the AIM Programme. The intern will support the delivery and follow-up of AIM programme activities, including VSLA formation, livelihood asset support, participant follow-up, education monitoring, and transition to formal financial services, while gaining practical skills in community engagement, programme implementation, monitoring, and coordination.

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of The Senior Branch Manager, the PO intern is expected to:

• Form and follow-up VSLAs to create a savings culture to the participants and to serve few other programme activities by leveraging this platform based on the programme design.
• Help with conditional cash transfers of assets and cost recovery of such assets.
• Ensure a minimum 80% of transition to formal microfinance institutions for AIM livelihood participants.
• Conduct participant follow-up through initial/immediate home visits after receiving livelihood assets, home visits, and group visits to ensure the asset safety and growth, increase household income, and confidence building.
• Deliver the education follow-up standards for the assigned intervention school: quarterly attendance verification, monthly peer-mentor study circle (PLC) follow-up and an annual home visit for each education participant.
• Prepare and follow a monthly work plan that routes visits efficiently within a compact catchment (about 16 home visits in a morning at 20 minutes per visit, VSLA visits on Tuesday to Thursday mornings in weeks 1 and 3 with afternoon home visits close to the VSLA visited), keeping Friday afternoons for the weekly branch meeting and one Friday morning a month for the school visit.
• Achieve at least 90% completion of due home visits each month, and alert the Branch Manager immediately where the portfolio exceeds 210 livelihood participants or completion falls below that level, so that the portfolio can be rebalanced.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety of team members from harm, abuse, neglect, harassment, and exploitation to achieve the project goals on safeguarding implementation.
• Act as a key source of support, guidance, and expertise on safeguarding to establish a safe working environment.
• Practice, promote, and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action.
• Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any reportable incident takes place; encourage others to do so.

Requirements

• Graduate or Diploma Social studies, Community development, Gender and Development, Human Resources, Business Administration, and other related subjects.
• At least 1 year of experience in the international development sector, including experience working with marginalized communities to implement community development programs, including education, microfinance, livelihood, agricultural and food security, and/or girl’s, women’s empowerment programs and other related programmes/projects.
• Experience as an AIM club mentor, or in a comparable community facilitation or group mobilisation role, is an added advantage.
• Experience in managing savings groups (VSLA or equivalent), cash or asset transfers and cost recovery or instalment collection is an added advantage.
