Dignity Kwanza is currently implementing a Child Protection Program in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Kasulu District, Kigoma Region, Tanzania. The program focuses on strengthening child protection systems, providing case management services for at-risk children, supporting birth registration, and enhancing community-based protection mechanisms to ensure children's safety and well-being.
Overall Purpose of the Role
Under the direct supervision of the Child Protection Coordinator, the Psychosocial Support Officer will support the delivery of psychosocial support services to children and adolescents in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp. The role focuses on facilitating structured psychosocial activities, supporting children’s well-being, and contributing to a safe and protective environment through engagement with children, caregivers, and community structures.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide psychosocial support services to children and adolescents in need, including structured individual and group-based psychosocial activities.
- Supervise psychosocial support activities within the Child Friendly Space (CFS), including structured play, recreational activities, life skills sessions, group discussions, creative activities, emotional support sessions, and other child-friendly activities aimed at promoting children’s emotional well-being, resilience, and positive mental health, ensuring activities are implemented on time and meet program goals.
- Organize and facilitate capacity building and supervision of community structures in all their duties within the community.
- Assist in the facilitation of parents and community meetings for child protection clubs (CPCs).
- Screen for and monitor protection needs and gaps in and around the CFS.
- Ensure the participation of all groups of children, especially children living with disabilities.
- Assist facilitators in solving problems arising in CFS.
- Assist teachers, facilitators, and animators in working with children and develop new creative activities as appropriate.
- Facilitate inter-agency referrals for vulnerable children and families, carry out follow-ups, and provide prompt feedback on referred cases to responsible agencies.
- Establish and maintain a database of children identified, assessed, and supported with psychosocial services within the camp.
- Collaborate with other team members in the implementation of project activities.
- Conduct any other related activities as deemed necessary by the Child Protection sector that may arise from time to time.
- Ensure adherence to PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) and organizational Code of Conduct.
- Immediately report any safeguarding concerns or breaches.
Data Collection and Reporting
- With support from the Child Protection Coordinator and M&E personnel, track indicators, maintain, update, and analyze data on activity and indicators.
- Support and work closely with the Child Protection Coordinator and M&E personnel on program data collection, tracking indicators, and maintaining, updating, and analyzing data on program activities.
Logistics Duties
- Take care of equipment and supplies for the job.
- Ensure working equipment is in good condition and replenish/repair when out of order.
- Report immediately any security incident or concern identified within DIGNITY Kwanza’s operational areas.

Experience and Technical Competencies
- At least 2 years of professional experience in PSS, Protection, Social work in humanitarian or development programming; experience working in refugee camp settings is an added advantage.
- Demonstrates good understanding of mental health and psychosocial support practices in a similar position.
- Ability to identify the main gaps in child protection in the given context to inform a holistic response for children.
- Self-awareness and proven ability to operate successfully in different cultural environments.
- Good team leader and team member skills, including the ability to be part of and organize, support, manage, and develop a small team.
- Ability to manage stress, be flexible and accommodating in difficult and frustrating working circumstances.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or related technical field in a well-recognized college or university (preferred).
Languages
Good proficiency in written and spoken English and Swahili.
Hours and Location of Work
The Psychosocial Support Officer will be based in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Kasulu District, Kigoma Region, Tanzania. The candidate should be able to work at least 40 hours per week (Full-time).
