Position – Senior Legal Counsel.

Job Purpose.

The Senior Legal Counsel supervises and execute the legal functions within the litigation unit of the legal department. Providing business and legal affairs support required by the business in the Bank. This includes being a trusted advisor to the Managers and senior bank officers; delivering first hand, first-class business and legal affairs support on matters of key strategic, financial and reputational importance to the business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develops annual plans in accordance with the Strategy and or Business Plan of the Bank in order to provide relevant legal assistance and ensure Annual Plans are executed timely.
• Ensures a relevant training, and succession plan is developed and executed Banks’ operations are carried out in compliance with the law and that Banks’ interest is fully protected at all times.
• Conduct research, provide Opinions, handle legal correspondences, drafting and filing pleadings, attending court without failure.
• Support HR department particularly on employment and labour laws especially with regard to the procedure for the appointment, termination, and dismissal of staff and attending to CMA cases for the Bank.
• Coordination and Support of Recovery activities including; assisting in conducting the investigation, providing technical guidance in handling recoveries; updating Credit & Recovery status of court orders restring the bank
• Ensures adequate information exchange among Legal staff and ensures they are kept up to date with relevant strategic developments of the department.
• Supervises subordinates productivity and oversees their responsibilities, establishes a 4-eye principle approach for mid-and high-risk level tasks that subordinates are in charge of.
• Ensures drafting, review, and monitoring of the Banks’ legal documents (e.g. Pleadings etc.
• Conduct and attend risk Management and control meetings and planning.
• Ensures the implementation of coaching for Legal staff and provides regular feedback to team members.

Selection Criteria and Qualifications

• Advocate with a minimum of 5 years’ legal practice experience, of which 2 years was in a supervisory role.
• Knowledge, understanding & practice of the bank’s lending technology and retail services business.
• Leadership Skills, self-commitment, work under minimum supervision o Knowledge of legal with Bank’s Policies and Procedures o Ability and willingness to work in a team; o Good Computer literacy in Word and Excel; o Fluent in Swahili basic command of English.
