Senior Mine Geologist - 2 Positions Available
Reports to: Mine Geology Superintendent
Duty Station: Nyanzaga, Sengerema, Mwanza
Contract type: Specified Period of Time Contract
Position Purpose
The Senior Mine Geologist is directly accountable for leading all daily Grade Control (GC) activities in the open pit and for delivering robust geological inputs in line with the Mine Management Plan (MMP). This role leads GC block modelling and wireframing, plans and supervises RC grade control drilling, and manages GC sampling and logging to ensure precise ore–waste delineation and strict control of dilution and ore loss.
The Senior Mine Geologist safeguards the accuracy and integrity of all geological data through validation and effective database management, ensuring that operational decisions are based on reliable, up-to-date information. The role is also responsible for operational End-of-Month (EOM) reporting and mine-to-mill reconciliation, and has clear accountability for defining and applying Not Acid Forming (NAF)/Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) criteria, and for ensuring material is routed correctly to waste rock dumps (WRDs), NAF/PAF destinations with operational and environmental requirements.
Roles and Responsibilities
Management of Safety, Environment, and Community Relations
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership and promote a strong safety culture within the Mine Geology team.
- Participate in the development, review, and updating of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)/Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for mine geology and grade control tasks, and ensure the team understands and applies these procedures.
- Identify geology-related hazards at pit faces and drill patterns (access, bench edges, interaction with equipment, heat, dust, visibility) and intervene or stop work where conditions are unsafe.
- Support community and environmental objectives by working in line with site requirements and respecting local customs and practices.
People Management
- Supervise and mentor Mine Geologists, Junior Geologists, and Grade Control Technicians to build capability in GC drilling supervision, sampling, logging, GC wireframing, GC block modelling, database management, and reconciliation.
- Allocate daily and weekly tasks, set clear expectations for data quality, safety, and field discipline, and monitor performance.
- Provide on-the-job training and coaching to develop national staff, supporting structured competency development and succession planning.
- Contribute to performance reviews with objective feedback on technical skills, safety performance, and behaviours.
Operations: GC Drilling and Sampling
- Plan and supervise RC GC drilling programs to achieve appropriate data density for ore–waste delineation in line with the MMP.
- Define and maintain NAF/PAF coding and classification requirements and ensure they are applied in drilling instructions, logging, and sampling.
- Coordinate with Survey and drilling contractors to deliver safe, accurate drilling and oversee RC and blast-hole sampling, including chain of custody.
- Lead Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) for GC sampling (standards, blanks, duplicates, repeats) and investigate and close out any QA/QC issues.
GC Wireframing and Block Modelling
- Maintain and update GC mineralisation wireframes using current drilling, mapping, and logging data.
- Build and update short-range GC block models to support ore mark-up, short-term planning, and dilution control.
- Produce and communicate key sections and plans for use by Mining, Planning, and Metallurgy.
Ore Mark-up, ROM Pad & WRD / NAF–PAF Support
- Issue clear, accurate ore polygons and dig plans to Mining and Survey to minimise ore loss and dilution and meet grade targets.
- Provide geological input to ROM pad stockpile building and reclaim to maintain stable crusher feed.
- Provide operational guidance on NAF/PAF classification and coding and ensure correct routing of material to WRDs, NAF/PAF destinations.
Data & Database Management
- Ensure all GC drilling, sampling, logging, and assay data are captured, validated, and loaded into the geological database in a timely manner.
- Maintain a clean, auditable GC database (including NAF/PAF coding) with robust data validation and QA/QC checks.
- Generate regular data outputs (sections, plans, grade/tonnage summaries) to support Planning, Mining, and Metallurgy.
Reconciliation and Reporting
- Lead operational reconciliation: GC model vs mined (survey) and mined ore vs plant feed in collaboration with Metallurgy and Mining.
- Prepare monthly reconciliation summaries, including tonnage, grade, dilution, and ore loss, and explain key variances and trends.
- Identify reconciliation issues (model, sampling, mining practice) and drive corrective actions with Mine Geology, Mining, Survey, and Metallurgy; provide GC inputs to weekly and monthly site reports.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Proficiency with Micromine for wireframing, modelling, and grade control.
- Experience with Acquire for data management and QA/QC.
- Experience in greenfield to operational ramp-up projects.
- Experience working in remote, multicultural environments.
Qualifications and Licences
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or equivalent.
- Professional membership desired.
- Valid driver’s licence suitable for mine site conditions.
