Sociologist

INDUSTRY: CONSTRUCTION

HR World Limited, on behalf of our client, is seeking an experienced and community-focused Sociologist to manage and strengthen relationships between a major road construction project, surrounding communities, government authorities, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders. The role will be responsible for identifying and managing social risks, facilitating stakeholder engagement, addressing community grievances, and ensuring that project activities are socially responsible, culturally sensitive, and compliant with applicable Tanzanian requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and maintain positive and constructive relationships between the project and surrounding communities.
• Establish effective communication channels with villages, community representatives, traditional leaders, women’s groups, youth, pastoralists, farmers, and other vulnerable groups.
• Organize and facilitate community meetings, consultations, awareness sessions, and stakeholder engagement activities.
• Conduct social assessments, community profiling, stakeholder mapping, and maintain an up-to-date stakeholder database.
• Identify, assess, monitor, and report social risks associated with road construction activities.
• Monitor social impacts relating to land use, access, livelihoods, employment, cultural practices, migration, pastoralism, traffic, construction camps, and community safety.
• Provide early warnings to management regarding emerging social conflicts, grievances, and community-related risks.
• Recommend and monitor implementation of practical measures to mitigate identified social impacts and risks.
• Promote culturally appropriate engagement with Maasai, indigenous/traditional groups, and other local communities.
• Respect and incorporate traditional leadership structures, cultural practices, pastoralist movements, grazing patterns, and local livelihood systems into stakeholder engagement activities.
• Establish and maintain an effective community grievance mechanism.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Social Sciences, Anthropology, Community Development, Development Studies, or a related field from a recognized institution.
• Postgraduate qualification in Social Development, Social Management, Environmental/Social Management, or a related discipline will be an added advantage.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in social management, community engagement, stakeholder relations, or a similar role, preferably within road construction, infrastructure, or large-scale development projects.
• Strong knowledge of Tanzanian social, cultural, community, labour, land, and local government systems.
• Proven experience in community engagement, stakeholder management, social impact assessment, grievance management, and conflict resolution.
