Its mandate includes carrying out and coordinating medical research, promoting the use of research findings, and supporting the training of local personnel for scientific research into health problems.NIMR is currently collaborating with the Centre for Psychiatric Care in Copenhagen, Denmark, to implement the DIMENSION study (Digital Empowerment for Mental Health in Tanzania). Mental health disorders are a significant global health concern, particularly in low-income countries like Tanzania where they are often overlooked and underdiagnosed. Common mental disorders, especially depression, affect a large proportion of the population, with prevalence rates up to five times higher among people living with HIV due to biological, psychological, and social factors, including stigma and reduced access to care.Tanzania Job Market ContextWith fewer than 70 psychiatrists nationwide and limited mental health training for healthcare workers, many patients remain undiagnosed and untreated. The DIMENSION study, to be implemented in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, aims to address this gap by developing and testing a digital training platform to enhance the capacity of healthcare workers in identifying and managing mental health disorders. This will be achieved through a stepped-wedge randomised controlled trial design.
