I. Background
WWF Tanzania is part of WWF (The World Wide Fund for Nature), an international nongovernmental organization that deals with conservation of nature through a number of environmental management programmes. Our mission is to stop the degradation of the Planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. WWF Tanzania seeks to recruit a communications intern who will work closely with the communications team in implementing the Country Office’s Communication strategy. WWF Tanzania Communication priorities include increasing awareness of the WWF’s programmes to its target audience to trigger actions towards sustainable utilization of resources, encouraging participation of the communities involved in the projects and CSOs to support the conservation objectives, influencing policies or policy makers to support the WWF initiatives and programmes objectives and secure commitment of selected private sector companies to the programmes’ conservation objectives.
The Ruvuma Transboundary Landscape is an area of approximately 370,000 km² spanning southern Tanzania (Ruvuma, Mtwara, Lindi and Morogoro regions) and northern Mozambique (Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces). Named after the Ruvuma River (also known as the Rio Rovuma in Mozambique) that separates the two countries, the landscape is arguably one of the last remaining wilderness areas in the world. It is defined by the UNESCO World Heritage Site formerly Selous GR (of 48,000 km²) – most of which (30,893 km2) is now the Nyerere NP in Tanzania, the largest park in Africa – and the Niassa Special Reserve (42,000 km²) the largest conservation area in Mozambique.
The Ruvuma Transboundary Landscape is a priority for WWF offices in Tanzania and Mozambique. With the mix of habitats from miombo woodlands to coastal forests, wetlands and rivers, the area supports the African elephant, African wild dog and lion – all of which are priority species for WWF.
