Main role and purpose of the Job

The consultant will copyedit manuscripts submitted to the East African Health Research Journal to prepare them for publication. The consultant will report to editor-in-chief of the journal.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

i.                     Format manuscripts in Microsoft Word to ensure consistent styles are applied within and across articles

ii.                   Edit manuscripts to improve organization, readability, clarity, conciseness, and adherence to house style.

iii.                  Edit manuscript and related files for errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.

iv.                 Verify facts, dates, and statistics, using standard reference sources.

v.                   Check data referenced in the body of manuscripts against related tables and figures.

vi.                 Format references according to American Medical Association (AMA) reference style guidelines.

vii.                Ensure in-text citations are in proper numerical order according to AMA guidelines.

viii.              Edit tables and figures and format according to house style.

ix.                 Proofread articles after typesetting to ensure adherence to house style and appropriate layout, correct misspellings, resolve grammar and punctuation errors, and confirm URL links are active.

x.                   Collate internal and author corrections to articles after typesetting.

xi.                 Communicate with editors and authors to resolve questions.

xii.                Adhere to deadlines to ensure timely and successful publication of each issue.

xiii.              Interact with Editorial Manager Manuscript management system.

 Minimum Job Requirements Academic and professional qualifications:

 Masters or Ph.D. in biology or medical field

Work experience:

5 years of experience editing journal articles or equivalent-style research papers.

Skills and competencies:

·         Native English speaker with thorough knowledge of the English language

·         Familiarity with various style guides and manuals, particularly the AMA Manual of Style

·         Familiarity with British spelling

Ability to adhere to tight deadlines

Experience with fact checking - Concentration, accuracy, and great attention to detail - Tact and diplomacy for negotiating changes with authors - Self-motivation - IT skills, especially MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Graphic design skills a plus.

The above position is tenable for a contract period of twelve months renewable under satisfactory performance.
