Job Description

Overview IEWY Project:

IEWY is addressing the issue of limited, insecure, and stagnating economic benefits enjoyed by rural women and youth involved in the dairy sub-sector. This is important because; the dairy sector shows good market opportunity, and strong pro-poor potential exists, but remains largely untapped.

In the project area, over 140,000 households are involved in dairy production but major production, collection, marketing, and processing challenges exists which limits economic benefits for rural women and youth.  At household level, dairy cows are owned by men, whereas women perform 95% of dairy activities and with increasing sales volumes, control over income shifts to their husbands.

Youth are involved in household dairy activities as free family labor. Few youth are able to set up their own dairy farms due to constraints in accessing finance and ownership of land, and animals. A substantial number of youth are involved in the informal milk trade, but this is a vulnerable form of self-employment

IEWY project goal is to improve the livelihoods, particularly of women and youth, in rural households in the dairy value chain in Hai and Siha districts in Kilimanjaro region, specifically by (a) improving production and productivity of smallholder dairy farmers, (b) increasing the amount of, and control over, income earned by women from dairy activities, (c) enterprise and employment creation for young people, (d) strengthening producer organizations with improved services, and (e) increasing knowledge sharing and learning.
