Overview

The Aga Khan Health Service Tanzania (AKHST) an institution of The Aga Khan Development Network, is completing a major phase II expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2018. This expansion aims at improving the Hospital’s quality of facilities and infrastructure to become an ultra modern 170-bed facility in order to increase its capacity as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital.

The Phase II development is focusing on expanding key clinical services including a comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services, and neurosciences, as well as the expansion of orthopedics and trauma, diagnostic imaging, critical care, and women and child health programmes.

The Hospital is ISO and JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, which offers postgraduate medical education programs leading to Master’s of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Surgery.

 

It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that are located across Tanzania. Currently, 20 such clinics have been established across the country and linked the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.

We are seeking enthusiastic and qualified experienced personnel for the following position:

NURSE MANAGER, ACCIDENT, AND EMERGENCY – (1 POSITION)

JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring and maintaining quality and safe clinical nursing practices, participate in quality improvement activity and hospital projects, management of operational issues of the unit and management of human resource of the Accident and Emergency unit.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Evaluation and Improvement of Clinical Practice

  • Makes daily rounds of all patients in the unit, reviews patient’ health status performs the health assessment of high risk/critical patient care needs
  • Ensure that nursing care is planned and prioritized according to the identified need
  • Ensures that care planned is delivered and clinical outcomes are evaluated.
  • Ensures the safe delivery of care to patients ensuring policy and procedure compliance
  • Maintains regularly checks on patients documentation to ensure completion as per set standard for initial assessment and reassessment forms, PFE form, POE sheet, nursing notes, intake & output and other unit specific forms.

Human Resource Management

  • Ensures that staffs are compliant with their roles and responsibilities assigned.
  • Ensures adequate staff coverage in each shift including weekend and public holiday following defined nurse-patient ratio.
  • Counsels nursing staff in case of performance issues and provides opportunities for remedial activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in conducting the performance appraisal and maintains timely documentation and anecdotal records for use in summative and formative performance appraisals.
  • Maintains timely communication regarding confirmation of staff, performance, transfer and resignation information with Manager/head of nursing.
  • Conducts regular staff meeting to discuss concerns and issues.
  • Participate in staff recruitment process

Operational Management

  • Keeps the updated record of requests/complaints made related to supplies, equipment, maintenance, housekeeping, food service and takes follow up
  • Establishes a collaborative working relationship with clinicians, diagnostic and support services in order to facilitate the timely delivery of patient care.
  • Consults with the program administrator/head of nursing regarding the unit operational matter.
  • Monitors and does follow-ups of all incident reports and disciplinary action.
  • Maintain credentialing record and updated staff file.

Quality Improvement Activities

  • Establishes unit-based standards, goals, objectives, and priorities, monitors performance against the same and takes corrective measures and prepares quarterly/biannually reports
  • Define clinical indicators, monitor its trends and takes corrective action.
  • Reports clinical incidences and implement lessons learnt.
  • Takes initiative in preparing unit specific policies and procedures to guide nursing practice.
  • Actively participates in the follow up of audit recommendations.
  • Attends relevant Mortality and Morbidity meetings and ensures that active follow-up is done with the recommendations and conclusion from there-in
  • Pursue institutional mandates of quality improvement and patient safety in their unit

Periodic Duties/Responsibility

  • Perform responsibilities as shift supervisor as per assigned
  • Perform any other duties as may be delegated
 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Valid license to practice from TNMC
  • At least 6 years experience with minimum 3 years experience in respective unit
  • Certification in ACLS, BLS, PALS, and NRP will be added requirement with respect to clinical specialty.
