Amref Health Africa – Tanzania is a leading non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to improving community health and strengthening health systems. With support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we are implementing the Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) initiative, aimed at enhancing the prevention and care of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) in vulnerable populations across India and East Africa. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Project Accountant to join our team in Dar es Salaam.
Job Description
The Project Accountant plays a crucial role in ensuring the disciplined financial execution of our country program. This position is responsible for accurate financial reporting, strict compliance with donor and organizational requirements, and effective coordination of program-level financial processes. Reporting to the Tanzania Senior Programme Accountant, you will ensure that all financial transactions, reconciliations, budget implementation tracking, and reporting inputs are accurate, timely, and audit-ready. Your work will be vital in maintaining the financial integrity of our operations, supporting informed decision-making, and safeguarding donor confidence.
This role demands strong technical competence, meticulous attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and the ability to thrive in complex, multi-partner, donor-funded environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Execution & Controls: Process and review country program financial transactions, maintain accurate accounting records, perform monthly reconciliations, and ensure robust audit trails. Apply internal controls consistently to safeguard resources and mitigate financial risk.
- Budget Monitoring and Performance Tracking: Support budget and forecast preparation, monitor expenditure against approved budgets, flag variances, and prepare variance analyses to support decision-making.
- Donor Compliance and Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate and timely financial reports, ensure adherence to donor cost rules and eligibility criteria, and support financial inputs for donor narrative reports. Assist in preparing for donor financial audits.
- Multi-program Country Financial Coordination: Coordinate with country finance teams to ensure timely submission of financial reports, review country-level financial data for consistency, and escalate identified risks or inconsistencies.
- Financial Process Improvement & Risk Awareness: Identify opportunities for improving financial workflows and reporting clarity. Apply sound professional judgment in addressing financial discrepancies and adapt to evolving program needs.
- People and Performance: Take ownership of individual performance objectives, contribute to a high-performing finance function, and demonstrate reliability in meeting deadlines.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration: Maintain effective working relationships with country program teams, communicate financial requirements clearly, and support coordination during audits and donor reviews.
- Continuous Learning: Contribute to knowledge sharing, pursue professional development, and stay updated on donor financial regulations and accounting standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Accounting or Finance, with at least five (5) years in NGOs, international development, or mission-driven organizations.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field. A CPA, ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification is advantageous.
- Demonstrable project management skills, including budgeting, costing, planning, and attention to operational details.
- Experience managing financial operations across different regulatory, tax, and banking environments.
- Experience working with multiple currencies and fiscal calendars.
- Demonstrable experience managing finances for donor-funded programs, including restricted funding and donor-specific financial reporting requirements.
- Practical experience or leadership in donor financial audits, responding to queries, and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience supporting, supervising, and strengthening country-level finance teams.
- Fluent in oral and written English.
