Main Purpose of Job:
To provide transport services for staff and other authorized passengers at the British High Commission (BHC) to and from assigned destinations within Tanzania in a safe, efficient and courteous manner, strictly adhering to road traffic rules, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Transport Policy, BHC Transport Policy and Post’s security regulations. This is an exciting opportunity to work in British High Commission - Dodoma, providing all-round logistic support to the mission. The successful applicant must have a clean driving licence and have a minimum of four years driving experience. The applicants also require good working knowledge of the city, its environs and other areas of the country.
The individual will need to be extremely efficient in managing their time in an environment which is dynamic and liable to change at very short notice. The individual should be able to think ahead and choose the best route for the journey, demonstrate initiative, be extremely discreet and polite in all dealings with both internal and external contacts as a representative of the Mission.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Driving the British High Commission staff to and from meetings and events in Dodoma and on field visits in Tanzania
Delivering and collecting items such as invitations, notes, messages, and packages
Transporting other authorized passengers as may be directed
Assuming responsibility for the safety of the British High Commission staff and other passengers while they are in or around one of the official vehicles
Advising British High Commission staff and other passengers on safety procedures especially in unfamiliar situations or surroundings
Monitoring safety risks while driving or accompanying staff and other passengers, and reacting pre-emptively and defensively as required
Monitoring area safety and utilizing different routes when driving to/from destinations to maximize safety of staff and other passengers
Keeping confidential all information concerning the British High Commission staff programs and any other information about the British High Commission staff and other passengers whom the driver learns while carrying out his/her duties
Keeping the official vehicle clean and tidy through normal washing and polishing
Ensuring the Servicing the official vehicle with gasoline, lubricants, coolant and battery electrolyte and performing minor maintenance tasks and repairs
Reporting to the transport manager any defects or repairs required to keep the official vehicle in proper road condition and by ensuring that repairs are properly affected; and assisting dignitaries and other passengers as directed with airport formalities
Assisting staff and other passengers in support of official functions
Handling e-mail correspondence
Keeping a log of various official transport related journeys.
Assisting the office in Dodoma as the First Aider/Deputy Health and safety officer
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Able to communicate effectively in English and Swahili
Certificate in Driving
Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills
Computer Skills (Microsoft Office and Outlook)
Strong customer service skills
3 years’ experience as a Driver within a government or NGO or Corporate / Office environment
Good knowledge of local city roads, locations of government offices and main roads to other parts of the country
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
VIP driving training
Specialized driver training
First aid certificate
