Position Title: Entomological Advisor 
Location:  Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania 
Reports to: Chief of Party 

 
General summary/purpose 
The Entomological Advisor will lead the use of data to provide quality technical expertise to the Government of Tanzania and malaria partners on new developments in vector control. The Advisor will lead entomological monitoring on various mosquitos and their habitats. This monitoring may involve conducting field studies, performing laboratory experiments, or analysing data to better understand the behaviour and ecology of mosquitos. The Advisor will use entomological and other data to create evidence-based strategies, policies, and guidelines. The Advisor will be able to work in a fast-paced environment independently and as a team member. They will possess strong entomological and analytical skills. 
Travel within Tanzania will be required.


 
Specific Duties and Responsibilities 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.   
Data collection and quality assurance 

Supervise implementation of data collection activities on different species of mosquitos 
Develop and implement quality assurance procedures for data collection to ensure data accuracy and the validity and reliability of monitoring data and study results  
Develop plans and policies for malaria control interventions to address findings of vector monitoring results 
Conduct site visits to ensure quality, reliability, and consistency of data and seamless flow from the Tanzania central office and onto the US Baltimore office 
Supervise the collection and reporting of data related to performance indicators required by USAID and report data on a regular basis 

 
Data storage 

Create, maintain, and safeguard electronic databases and any other data collection files in compliance with JHU data security requirements 
Manage access permissions for data entry and dashboards to view monitoring output  
Help prepare data for archiving as required by USAID’s Digital Data Archive policies 


 
Data analysis and reporting 

Track, analyze, and produce comprehensive and succinct reports and documentation on indicators and measures 
Conduct data cleaning and analysis on a monthly basis and produce graphs and reports for quarterly reporting 
Lead development of annual reports detailing the data driven selection of and approaches to vector control interventions, informed by their entomological monitoring and high-quality technical assistance to inform strategies and implementation of effective vector control interventions 

 
Coordination and communication 

Provide expert technical assistance and guidance on proposed plans or approaches to the National Malaria Control Program and Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program on other vector control interventions 
With the Chief of Party, coordinate with partners and stakeholders within the Ministry of Health 
Ensure timeliness and quality of service delivery data from partners 
Work with the program team to ensure proper documentation via knowledge management approaches 
Participate in the development and writing of strategies, work plans, and assessments 
Maintain efficient communication with Baltimore-based program and Research and Evaluation teams 

 
Minimum Qualifications 

Five years of experience managing entomological research programs 


Master’s degree in entomology, public health, biology or a related field 
Demonstrated experience and familiarity with conducting research and field work  
Strong background in biology, chemistry, statistics, and data analysis 
Good organizational skills and leadership qualities 
Exceptional communication skills in written and spoken English 

 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

Knowledge of data collection protocols for quality data collection and verification  
Proficiency in data analysis and statistical software 
Strong analytical skills to interpret data and ability to articulate oral and written technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences 
Ability to guide quality assurance/continuous quality improvement in development 
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills 
Excellent past performance references 
Knowledge of the various regions of Tanzania 
Experience in Tanzania 
Exceptional communication skills in written and spoken English 

 
Preferred Qualifications 

Tanzanian citizenship 
Fluency in Swahili 

 
Travel Requirements: 
May require up to 25% travel
