In East Africa, GIZ supports the East African Community (EAC) in achieving its regional integration and development objectives.
The EAC AI Alliance is a regional initiative aimed at fostering digital transformation across the eight Partner States of the East African Community. The initiative promotes collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers to strengthen AI research and education, advance regional AI policy development, and support innovation ecosystems in East Africa. Key activities include the establishment of a regional AI research network, development of AI education benchmarks, support for AI-driven startups, and facilitation of partnerships between Europe and East Africa in the field of artificial intelligence.
The programme is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in close collaboration with the EAC Secretariat, the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), and the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO).
To support the implementation of the EAC AI Alliance activities, we are seeking a motivated AI Alliance Intern to assist the project team in research, coordination of regional activities, knowledge management, and stakeholder engagement across the East African AI ecosystem.

Duty Station: Arusha
Duration: 01.04.2026 - 30.09.2026

Responsibilities

Conduct background research and analysis on artificial intelligence policies, governance, and innovation ecosystems in East Africa and globally.
Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagements involving regional institutions, universities, private sector partners, and development partners.
Support the preparation of briefing notes, presentations, concept notes, and reports related to project activities.
Contribute to knowledge management and periodic evaluation of the impact of project activities, including results-based monitoring.
Monitor regional and global developments and events in artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and emerging technology governance.
Support the development of knowledge products, communication materials, and internal documentation related to AI initiatives in the region.
Contribute to strengthening knowledge sharing within the regional AI ecosystem.
Provide administrative and coordination support to the project where required.
Perform other relevant tasks as assigned by the project team.


Required Qualifications, Competences, and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, International Relations, Economics, Business or related fields (Master’s degree will be a plus).


Competencies and Professional Experience:

Demonstrated interest in artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and emerging technology governance.
Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to synthesize information and contribute to policy, advisory, or analytical outputs.
Good understanding of innovation ecosystems, digital economy trends, or technology policy developments.
Ability to work proactively, demonstrate initiative, and take ownership of assigned tasks in a fast-paced project environment.
Strong organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to support regional processes and stakeholder engagements.
Curiosity, adaptability, and a solution-oriented mindset with a strong drive to contribute to the successful implementation of project activities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and online collaboration tools.


Language Skills:

Excellent command of English (written and spoken); Knowledge of Swahili or French is an added advantage.


Additional Requirements:

The internship is for a period of six months.
The intern will receive a stipend in accordance with GIZ internship policy.
