Intern - Supporting Community Engagement and Livelihood and Human Wildlife Conflicts

WWF International expanded its global Youth Engagement Programme for 18-30 year olds in 2024. The Programme, which provides volunteering, internships, grassroots leadership training and virtual mentorship opportunities, aims to inspire a new generation of environmental advocates and leaders, especially young women, in their countries and communities to actively contribute to youth and community-led conservation and help drive positive change.

Mission of the Department

To halt natural resources degradation and biodiversity loss in WWF Tanzania’s priority landscapes and seascape by securing habitats and species, promoting nature-based solutions and sustainable production practices for harmonious co-existence between people and nature.

Major Functions

The intern will assist in the implementation of conservation projects and contribute to WWF Tanzania’s mission of protecting the country’s rich natural resources. S/he will have practical experience in biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and community engagement and inclusion in conservation. The intern will be responsible for assisting the conservation teams in the implementation of innovative and dynamic environmental education and outreach activities in supporting the management and execution of conservation activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the wildlife and forest teams in planning for conservation initiatives
  • Assist the wildlife and forests teams in supervising and managing sustainable natural resources in the specific villages and wildlife management areas
  • Assist conservation teams in ideation and implementation of inclusive conservation in the geographical and thematic areas identified for implementation
  • Work with the communications and conservation teams in ideation and implementation of youth engagement initiatives
  • Provide support to conservation team in the management and mentoring of environmental clubs and tree nurseries in schools
  • In collaboration with communication personnel liaise with Community and document the impacts related to livelihood investments done within respective landscapes
  • Provide support in activity report writing and provide data inputs to WWF technical progress reports (TPR)
  • Perform other activities relating to conservation as defined by WWF Tanzania Country Office and supervisor
  • Maintain a good image of the organization to ensure that WWF remains among the most respected in the country and beyond
  • Produce performance reports quarterly and at the end of the internship period for assessment
  • Travel for field assignments in areas where WWF Tanzania has projects

Supervisor Role:

  • Introduce and orient intern to staff, stakeholders and overall work environment
  • Provide guidance, coaching and counselling to the intern on the job role and competencies to be demonstrated
  • Produce an intern performance assessment report at the end of the internship period

Profile

Required Qualifications:

A diploma certificate or higher on a relevant subject (e.g., wildlife management, environmental science Management, Community Development, Environmental Science or similar qualification)

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Willingness and ability to frequent travels within the project area
  • Good social and communication skills
  • Fluent in Swahili and English, good English writing skills
  • Organizational and time management skills required to meet deadlines and, ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to safeguarding in a local and international context
  • Demonstrates ability and willingness to work in a diverse, multicultural, and intergenerational environment that is anti-racist and respectful of others
  • Supportive of people’s right regardless of their gender orientation

Working Relationships

Internal:

Interacts regularly with conservation Project teams and TCO Staff

External:

Work with relevant implementing Partners, communities and government officials whenever relevant under specific assignments as advised by the supervisor
