Role context

This internship is designed to support interns from marginalised backgrounds by providing them with essential skills and experiences to secure gainful employment and facilitate their upward social mobility. This initiative is a key part of the British Council’s commitment to social value.

Main Accountabilities

We are seeking a Marketing and Communications Intern to support the British Council Tanzania team in promoting their profile, events, products, and services to both internal and external audiences and stakeholders. This internship will provide the postholder with a unique insight into all operational and programme areas, as well as an understanding of working with diverse audience and stakeholder groups in local, regional, and international contexts.

The role will include:

Asset Development and Planning:

  • Attend programme team meetings in Tanzania to understand priorities and identify upcoming events and promotional opportunities for products/services.
  • Audit existing asset libraries and develop a calendar of events to track all activity.
  • Develop compelling copy and visual assets, including social media content (posts), impact stories from programme activities, and summary documents for stakeholder engagement.

Social Media and Website:

  • Maintain social media activity, including creating, uploading, and sharing proposed content with designated Marketing Managers.
  • Liaise with the hub team for posting via the content tool (Airtable).
  • Track social media campaigns (where relevant) and compile engagement analytics.
  • Support relevant digital campaigns in both countries, identifying opportunities to highlight impact stories, case studies, and spotlight existing and new materials.

Event Support:

  • Assist in planning and promoting online and in-person events, such as webinars and stakeholder engagement events for our work in Arts, Education, and Exams.
  • Prepare event materials as required, such as flyers and name badges.
  • Support with logistics and event delivery as needed.

Market Research:

  • Conduct basic research on competitors.
  • Compile a stakeholder list, categorising VIP and sector contacts.

Administrative and Coordination Tasks:

  • Maintain marketing databases, including mailing lists and media contacts.
  • Update reports, calendars, and content publication schedules.
  • Support the coordination of internal communications within the team.
  • Coordinate between the British Council Tanzania team, the British Council Regional Marcomms team, and external outlets.

Brand and Reputation Monitoring:

  • Track media mentions, press coverage, and online sentiment about the organisation.

Collaboration and Learning:

  • Liaise with other departments to gather information for campaigns and projects.
  • Identify opportunities for internal promotion and showcasing.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas for new campaigns.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in digital marketing and communications.

Learning and Development Opportunities for the Intern

  • Copywriting, content creation, and digital campaigns.
  • Brand management and supporting Marcomms strategy and campaign design/delivery at local, national, and international levels with diverse audiences.
  • Prioritisation and time management.

  • Understanding of a global organisation and its ways of working, including frameworks and policies that guide best practice.
  • Networking and stakeholder engagement, contributing to the ambition of Programme and Country leadership teams.

Candidates are expected to have researched their right to live and work in the country where the role is based.
