Manager: Tax Litigation - Tanzania

Roles
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Tax Litigation Manager to lead and manage tax dispute resolution, litigation matters, and regulatory engagements. The Tax Litigation Manager will be responsible for managing and executing tax dispute and controversy matters for KPMG clients. This will include handling objections and appeals, representing clients before revenue authorities and tax tribunals, supporting tax audits, and providing strategic advice to mitigate tax risk and exposure. The role combines strong technical tax knowledge with litigation skills, project management, and client relationship management.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage tax litigation files from initial assessment through to resolution.
- Prepare objections, appeals, and representations to tax authorities and tribunals.
- Develop litigation strategies and argumentation based on legislation, case law, and practice.
- Coordinate and manage interaction with tax authorities during audits, investigations, and hearings.
- Review tax assessments and notices and advise clients on appropriate response strategies.
- Work closely with tax advisory teams to ensure consistency between advisory positions and litigation strategy.
- Build strong relationships with key client stakeholders (finance, tax, legal teams).
- Provide regular updates on case status, timelines, risks, and likely outcomes.
- Identify additional areas where KPMG can support clients (e.g., tax risk management, compliance reviews).
- Ensure all work complies with KPMG risk management, quality standards, and independence requirements.
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation of all case files and correspondence.
- Contribute to internal quality reviews and support implementation of best practices in tax controversy work.
- Support business development initiatives, including proposals and client presentations on tax controversy services. ajira
- Contribute to thought leadership (articles, alerts, seminars) on tax litigation and dispute trends.
Skill set
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal and tax matters clearly to clients and stakeholders.
- Strong legal research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret legislation, regulations, and case law.
- Excellent legal drafting skills, including the preparation and review of opinions, submissions, dispute documents, contracts, articles, and technical publications.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients, regulators, and colleagues.
- Demonstrated project management and coordination skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple engagements and competing deadlines.
- Proven ability to lead teams, coach and mentor staff, and foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with keen attention to detail and quality.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to quality service delivery.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Power point.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Law from an accredited university / college.
- Professional qualification (Must be a registered Advocate in Tanzania).
- Masters / Post Graduate Diploma in Taxation or any relevant field or qualification in Taxation from an accredited college/university will be an added advantage.
- A minimum of five years of experience in tax litigation, tax controversy, and tax audits.
- Demonstrated experience dealing with tax authorities, tribunals, and courts.
